Biography
The Molly Maguires allegedly murdered him. No suspect was ever brought to trial, although the county commissioners offered a $5,000 reward. The case would come to be regarded as another in a long list of unsolved Molly Maguire killings. Littlehales was the son of English-born William Littlehales of Pottsville, who, for many years, with his son, had operated small collieries in and about St. Clair.

In 1865, the younger Littlhales had become superintendent of the Glen Carbon Coal Company in Cass Township and had moved his family there in the winter of that year. He was in the habit of paying the men monthly in cash and at first carried the payroll, about $3,000, up from the bank in Pottsville in a sulky, but in view of the mounting number of highway robberies, he had by March of 1867 begun to carry it by rail in the cars.

On Friday, March 15, 1867 – the day before payday – he made the mistake of taking his sulky to Pottsville, as he had previously been used to do the day before payday, to transact some personal business. He left town by sulky early that afternoon, telling friends he would return the next day to pick up the payroll. But he never reached home. About half a mile from his residence, at about 3 PM, on a secluded section of the road, he was waylaid, shot, and killed.

After death, his eyes were blown out, perhaps by thieves angered at not finding the payroll. All the thieves gained by the murder was the little pocket money he had about him, a silver watch, and his revolver, which he had no opportunity to use. The body was discovered, but not recognized at first, by a physician who was riding up the Littlhales' residence to attend to William's son, whose leg had been amputated just below the knee two weeks before, in consequence of being run over by railroad cars.

The Miners Journal painted a pathetic scene at home: the hysterical widow on one bed, the corpse of her 32-year-old husband on a second, and her mutilated son on another. Mr. Littlehales left behind a widow and three young children; he was of unexceptionable character and highly regarded in the community7,8,9,11,13

Research Note
In Shropshire, West Midlands, England, three Richard Littlehales grew up at the same time: Richard Littlehales (#2804), born in 1744, Richard Littlehales 2nd (#2119), born in 1745, and Richard Littlehales (#1885) born in 1755.

One Richard, married Mary Thornes, the other two married Sarah's:
▶ On 04-FEB-1769, Richard married Mary Thornes of Pontesbury, which we are not concerned with since Richard Littlehales Jr.'s (#1465) mother's given name is Sarah.
▶ On 06-DEC-1768, Richard married Sarah Jones (#2296) in Pontesbury.
▶ On 04-SEP-1773, Richard married Sarah Thornes (#1884) in Shrewsbury, Pontesbury.

Unfortunately, the baptismal records for Sarah and Richard Littlehales' children don't specify which Sarah and which Richard are the parents of each child.

The conundrum is which one of the three Richard Littlehales and which Sarah are the parents of Richard Littlehales Jr. (#1465).

Consequently, placeholders were established for Sarah (Unknown) (#2298) and Richard (the Undetermined) Littlehales (#2297), representing the parents of the children whose parental status has not been identified. To reduce confusion, ONLY Richard Littlehales Jr.'s (#1465) profile has the other three Richards and two Sarahs identified as parents.

The baptismal records list the church parishes of Great Hanwood, Hereford, Pixley, Pontesbury, Shrewsbury, or Westbury, all except Hereford, are in present-day Shropshire, West Midlands, England. Hereford parish is in Herefordshire.

The Hanwood Parish Registers were stored in an iron safe at the Hanwood Rectory in Shropshire. On April 5, 1873, a devastating rectory fire destroyed the Hanwood Shropshire Parish Registers. Some data collected before the 1873 fire has been recovered and transcribed; however, the majority of the registers remain incomplete.

To complicate things even more, in West Midlands, England, there are two Pixleys, one in Herefordshire County, the other in Shropshire County, both were parishes under the Bishop of Hereford's ordinary. Currently covering all of Herefordshire County, southern Shropshire, and a few parishes in Worcestershire, Powys, and Monmouthshire. Click here to view the location of both Pixleys.

As more details become available, the records for these children and this section will be updated to include the correct parents.26,27
