Shortly after the war, she lived in Paris for a year. She worked in the Jamesville-DeWitt High School guidance office, obtained a paralegal certificate and finally worked as a legal secretary in various law offices and for the Onondaga County Law Department.4 |

Born in Trenton, N.J., but raised in Philadelphia, PA, Robert was the only son of the late Harold Greene Byington and Anna Eloise Cook. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pennsylvania. After a long career as an educator, he retired from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1996 as Professor Emeritus in the English Department. He was a member of the English Department faculty for 20 years and served as chair for a portion of that time. He moved to Wilmington in 1979 from Washington, D.C., after 6 years as Deputy Director of the Folklore Program at the Smithsonian. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II in the Philippines. Earlier he served in the Merchant Marine. He is survived by his wife, Ele McKenna Byington, and by his sister, Jean Williams. Also surviving are his three children and their spouses, Stacey, Sharon and Glenn, and Benjamin and Eva, plus three step sons, Joseph, Michael and Steven; two step daughters-in-law, Jennie and Laura Gayle; and eight grandchildren and step grandchildren.
