So with the end of the war in Europe, Bill was sent to a B-24 training Wing at Nashville AB, Tennessee where B-24 crews with less than 10 missions were trained in celestial navigation for the Pacific and 100 crews were trained each week for over 5 weeks sending over 500 B-24 crews and their airplanes to the Pacific Islands. Bill got to fly with the training crews, but not as a pilot. Both were honorably discharged with the rank of Private.16,17,18

Maddie grew up in Wyomissing, PA, and worked as a designer, in the J-D HS guidance office, and as a legal secretary for Onondaga County. She enjoyed skiing, golfing, bridge and was a tireless gardener. She sewed all her own clothes and taught the neighborhood kids to sew. She loved her one glass of wine. She was loving, engaged, inquisitive, supportive and kind. We miss her so much.

Spoke only French until kindergarten. Her father was a professional chef and her childhood home not having a kitchen, Maddie did not learn to cook until after she married. During WWII, she helped with the war effort, including victory gardens, food and gas rationing, war savings bonds, air raids at school and blackout curtains. Shortly after the war, she lived in Paris for a year. She worked in the Jamesville-DeWitt High School guidance office, obtained a paralegal certificate and finally worked as a legal secretary in various law offices and for the Onondaga County Law Department.4

Robert H. "Bob" Byington, age 76, died Thursday morning, June 10, at his home in Wilmington, N.C. Born in Trenton, N.J., but raised in Philadelphia, PA, Robert was the only son of the late Harold Greene Byington and Anna Eloise Cook. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pennsylvania. After a long career as an educator, he retired from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1996 as Professor Emeritus in the English Department. He was a member of the English Department faculty for 20 years and served as chair for a portion of that time. He moved to Wilmington in 1979 from Washington, D.C., after 6 years as Deputy Director of the Folklore Program at the Smithsonian. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II in the Philippines. Earlier he served in the Merchant Marine. He is survived by his wife, Ele McKenna Byington, and by his sister, Jean Williams. Also surviving are his three children and their spouses, Stacey, Sharon and Glenn, and Benjamin and Eva, plus three step sons, Joseph, Michael and Steven; two step daughters-in-law, Jennie and Laura Gayle; and eight grandchildren and step grandchildren. His zest for life and his keen sense of the absurd will be missed.9,10
