Biography |
|---|
Olof Persson Stille was a pioneer settler of New Sweden, a colony along the lower reaches of the Delaware River in North America claimed by Sweden from 1638 to 1655.
He became a leader among the settlers and was key in promoting the July 1653 list of grievances submitted to Governor Johan Printz, protesting his strict rule. Printz considered this action mutiny and subsequently returned to Sweden. Olof was exercising the right of free speech. When Governor Rising arrived, Olof asked for a prompt trial. Rising, who took a more kindly view toward the freeman, let the matter drop.
After the surrender of New Sweden, the Dutch governor, Petrus Stuyvesant, agreed to allow the Swedes and Finns living north of the Christina River to govern themselves. In 1656, Olof, until his retirement in 1664, served as the first chief justice of the Upland Court, the governing body of the New Sweden colony following the Dutch West India Company annexation from Swedish colonial rule2,4,1,7 |

Biography |
|---|
Before 1641, when he came to America with the Stille brothers (Olof and Axel), nothing has been found about Måns Svensson Lom personal history. His wife's name has yet to be found in any surviving records. Based on Swedish naming patterns, her name was probably Anna Petersdotter Stille, the sister of Olof and Axel Stille, sons of Peter Stille.
His name first appeared in New Sweden records on the passenger list of the Charitas, 3-MAY-1641. On the eve of that ship's departure from Stockholm on the first leg of its voyage to America. Listed directly above the family of Olof Stille and the bachelor Axel Stifle was "Måns Svensson Lom, a tailor and formerly a lieutenant, who intends to begin agriculture in New Sweden. He has received 5 Riksdaler but otherwise no salary; he goes with his wife, two almost grown-up daughters and a little son."
In New Sweden, he became one of the first settlers of present-day Delaware County, where he settled with the Stille brothers on a tract called "Techoherassi" by the Indians. Currently known as Eddystone, located on the Delaware River between Olof Stille's Creek (now Ridley Creek) and Crum Creek.
Måns Svensson Lom probably died in 1653. On 27 July 1653, his two sons-in-law, Peter Larsson Cock and John Wheeler, and Olof and Axel Stille were among the 22 freemen submitting a petition of grievances to Governor Printz. Lom's name was conspicuous in its absence. On 9-JUN-1654, after the arrival of Governor Johan Risinor, "Måns Lom's widow" was listed among the "old freemen" pledging allegiance to the new governor1 |

Biography |
|---|
During the Thirty Years' War, from 1638 to 1640, Hans served as a cavalryman in the Västgöta Regiment. Upon his return from the war in 1640, he camped with other troops near the Royal Garden at Varnhem Abbey, which the Swedish Royal Family owned. Governor Carl Siggesson Rosendufva allowed the men to pick apples from the garden, which had been neglected for decades since the monks transferred ownership to the crown in 1540. Hans noticed apple and cherry trees and returned later to collect wood to make farming tools, including combs for horses' manes. The villagers heard chopping sounds and sent a posse to the garden, where they arrested Hans.
Following his trial on 31 May 1641, Hans was sentenced to be hung. However, the provincial governor interceded on his behalf, reading at the trial a letter from Queen Christina which stated: "Our Royal Pleasure and Command is that you shall bring him without delay to court to be condemned according to his crime, afterwards leaving to his discretion whether he should sail...on our ship from Gothenburg to New Sweden, or hang; if he chooses the voyage to the said New Sweden, then you could tell him that when he has been there for six years he will be pardoned. But if he does not, you may execute the sentence and let him hang."
Hans Månsson chose to go to New Sweden and arrived in November on the Charitas, the same ship that also brought Olof Persson Stille and his daughter Ella Olofsdotter Stille. After serving six years on a tobacco plantation, he was freed.
In 1654, Månsson married Ella Stille (1634-1718), the oldest daughter of Olof Persson Stille. Ella's first husband, Peter Jochimsson, had died unexpectedly in Manhattan during the summer of 1654 when she was only 20. Månsson then took over the operation of the Jochimsson plantation at Aronameck (currently Grays Ferry, Philadelphia) and raised Ella's two children by Peter Jochimsson as his own. Ella had six additional sons with Hans Månsson.
Following Hans' death in 1691, Ella Stille and her sons adopted the surname Steelman.
Hans Månsson died at Senamensing, Burlington County, about 1691. The following year, his property was taxed to "Widow Hance." By 1693, Hans Månsson's widow and his six sons adopted the surname of Steelman, undoubtedly derived from her maiden name of Stille.2,1,5 |
