Research Note |
|---|
| During fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Welsh genealogy records used the word ap (or "ab" before a vowel) to refer to the "son of." The best example can be found in Historical collections relating to Gwynedd..., Chapter 5, page 33, Edward Foulke's Narrative of his Removal, which contains the following English translation of Edward's 1700 Welsh ancestry: "I, Edward Foulke, was the son of Foulke, ap Thomas, ap Evan, ap Thomas, ap Robert, ap David Lloyd, ap David, ap Evan Vaughan (ap Evan), ap Griffith, ap Madoc, ap Jerwert, ap Madoc, ap Ririd Flaidd, Lord of Penllyn, who dwelt at Rhiwaedog." Below is the 21st-century breakdown of the above sentence. ▶ Edward Foulke, was the son of Foulke (Edward and all those listed surname is Foulke) ▶ ap Thomas (son of Thomas) ▶ ap Evan (son of Evan, who was the father of the above Thomas) ▶ ap Thomas (son of Thomas, who was the father of the above Evan) ▶ ap Robert (son of Robert, who was the father of the above Thomas) ▶ ap David Lloyd (son of David Lloyd, who was the father of the above Robert) ▶ ap David (son of David, who was the father of the above David Lloyd) ▶ ap Evan Vaughan (ap Evan) (son of Evan Vaughan, who was the father of the above David. The "ap Evan" in parentheses might be a clarification or a repeated ancestral name, common in some pedigrees.) ▶ ap Griffith (son of Griffith, who was the father of the above Evan Vaughan) ▶ ap Madoc (son of Madoc, who was the father of the above Griffith) ▶ ap Jerwert (son of Jerwert, who was the father of the above Madoc) ▶ ap Madoc (son of Madoc, who was the father of the above Jerwert) ▶ ap Ririd Flaidd (son of Ririd Flaidd, who was the father of the above Madoc) Lord of Penllyn, who dwelt at Rhiwaedog The above listing outlines 12 generations of patrilineal ancestors leading back from Edward Foulke to Ririd Flaidd, Lord of Penllyn. Each "ap" introduces the father of the preceding individual in the chain. This was a common system of patronymics in Wales before the widespread adoption of fixed surnames.3,14,15 |
