Excerpt: The following excerpt is from Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley.
Francis Delaney was born in Paris, France, and educated for the priesthood in the Roman Catholic church. However, he abandoned his calling and came with General LaFayette to America, serving under him in the army during the continuance of the Revolutionary War.
After the war, he acquired a large farm close to Kissler, Perry County, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Francis was initially married in New York (c.1754) age 30, to Maria Potera (b. FEB 1728 - d. 31 MAY 1767) age 26, a French woman with whom he had several children, she died in Lancaster Co., PA, USA.
In his second marriage, he married Catharine Garling, an American, and they had 21 children.
Except timeline issue: The biography starts with Francis Delaney being born in Paris and coming to America with General Lafayette. It later states that Francis married in New York in 1754 and had several children.
The issue is that three years after Francis was married, in 1757, General LaFayette was born and did not embark for his first journey to America until January 13, 1777.
Francois De Lancy's FindAGrave memorial indicates that he immigrated to the US prior to 1754. This claim aligns with French military records indicating a François Deligny (b. 1733) was assigned to the US from December 27, 1752, and October 11, 1776. He was born in Chauny, Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France, which is 125 km (68 miles) from Paris.
Birth and death date issues: There is no certifiable or conclusive evidence that the 17 AUG 1724 birth date for Francis Delaney, as noted in FindAGrave is valid. If Francis Delaney had been born in 1724, he would have been 64 years old in April 1789 when his daughter, Barbara, was born.
Using Paris, France and the 1724 birth data as a baseline, a thorough examination of name variants from 1714 to 1734 across all available digital French birth records was performed in June 2025. Some records were discovered; however, none were found within a 200 km (125 mile) radius of Paris.
The date of death inscribed on the headstone indicates 1816. However, there is no supporting evidence to substantiate the date. Conversely, the 1811 death date has been verified by a will and probate document.
Marriage date clarification: Francis and Catherine's marriage date has yet to be solidified. A land deed agreement from May 1788 exists between George Garling and Francis Delancey in anticipation of his daughter's marriage to Francis.3,9,10,8,11 |
