Quoting History of Columbia and Montour Counties, Pennsylvania, Chapter XIX, Limestone Township, page 205, "When John Balliet came here he took up a large tract of land, which he afterward divided between his two children, John and Mary, the latter being the wife of Solomon Levan. This land is now divided into five farms. The wife of the elder John Balliet was Catharine Mickley; they had but the two children named, both of whom were born and married in Lehigh County. Both of the elder Balliets died about fifty years ago. The father of our subject, also named John, was born March 14, 1784¹, and died February 1, 1854. His wife was Elizabeth Schreiber, who was born September 7, 1782, and died March 35, 1858. John Balliet was always a farmer, never engaging in any other occupation ... Biography |
|---|
| Tancred LeBalyard, Paulus' forefather, was commander of French King Clodwig's armies to which his genealogy has been traced. The Balliet's emigrated to Germany from France, living in the province of Alsace on the Rhine. Paulus Balliet, pioneer of the family in America. At the age of 21 he was compelled to seek refuge, with many other French Protestants, in foreign countries on account of the religious persecution to which the Huguenots were subjected after the revocation of the famous edict of Nantes by King Louis XIV. He embarked for America on board the ship Robert Oliver and settled in what is now called Whitehall township, Lehigh county. There he became a large landholder, owning the ground on which Coplay, Whitehall and Ballietsville now stand. Was a delegate to the Reformed Church Coetus held in Lancaster in 17674,15,3,18 |
