In 1776, Stephen was a Lieutenant Colonel and in 1781, promoted to colonel. He fought under General Washington at the Battle of Brandywine, and after the American defeat there, he led the men who brought the Liberty Bell into Allentown from Philadelphia in September 1777, protecting it from capture by the British army. The bell was returned to the State House in June 1778.
On July 7, 1776 he took one of 3 original copies of the Declaration of Independence to Easton. The third public reading of the Declaration occurred the next day, on the courthouse steps.3 |

| Stephen Balliet, son of Paul Balliet, was born in 1753. In December 1776, he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel within the Revolutionary Army and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1781. In the year 1783, he was elected as a member of the Supreme Executive Council for a term of three years, and in the year 1789, he became a member of the House of Representatives. In 1797, he was appointed as the Revenue Collector for the Second District of Pennsylvania. He married Magdalena Burkhalter and died on August 4, 1821.8 |
