St. Thomas' Church & Churchyard, Great Hanwood, Shropshire, West Midlands, England

Hanwood Parish Registers, Volumes I (1559-1641), II (1653-1770), and III (1772-1812), were stored in an iron safe at the Hanwood Rectory in Shropshire. On April 5, 1873, the rectory caught fire. The high heat caused the contents inside the iron safe to burn. Some data collected before the 1873 fire have been recovered and transcribed; however, they are incomplete. The current registers begin in 1873, except for the Baptismal Register, which starts on January 10, 1813, and was not destroyed in the fire. In the Burial Register, some earlier records of deaths and burials from 1837 to 1873 were documented, allegedly taken from tombstones and similar inscriptions.
