Biography |
|---|
| In his early years, during the Great Depression, he traveled the rails (in the Mid-West). He ran illegal whiskey in the Mid-West during the days of Prohibition, riding a sidecar. In 1942 he met Leanetta Nielsen while digging for fishing worms in the Nielsen farm manure pile. See Leanetta Nielsen for detail of events that occurred until 1944. In 1944, Lea(netta) and Lester made a decision to move to Southern California. Their first home was in San Pedro, on a hill overlooking the shipyards (621 McArthur, now part of the Harbor Freeway). The new three bedroom, one bath house cost $5,250. In 1960, the family was forced to relocate. Plans for the new freeway went directly through their house. The city of San Pedro bought it for $10,000. The Tilton's moved into a new home in Torrance in October of the same year; the purchase price was $10,750, and was again a three bedroom, one bath house for the family of six, this time with and addition of a den, bar, and fireplace. The move was considered by the family as an upgrade in their quality of life. During the next twelve years, the family saw many changes; Connie had struck-out on her own several years before the move to Torrance, and Judy had married, as did Jackie. In 1972, Allyn graduated from high school. Lester, facing retirement, felt no need to stay in such a large house and did not feel he would be able to properly maintain and repair such a large home. Again, a move was predicated upon economic necessity; the three family members moved into a mobile home in Carson, CA. The house which had cost $10,750 in 1960 was sold for $37,000 twelve years later. Lester contracted cancer and was confined during his last year of life in convalescent home until he did.7 |

Research Note |
|---|
| In 1931, at the age of thirteen, Leanetta moved from her home to Eau Claire, WI (approximately twelve miles from the family home) to attend Eau Claire Junior High School. This move was the direct cause of two economic factors: first, it would mean one less mouth to feed and cloth in the Nielsen family, and second, Leanetta's salary would be sent to her father to help support the large family. She was provided with room and board while employed as a domestic in a local home. The following year she moved to Chippewa Falls, WI, sixty miles further away from her family, to attend Chippewa Falls High School. Again, she worked as a domestic and her salary was sent to her family. Upon graduation from High School she worked for several years in the Exland, WI Post Office. Discussions [with her] have revealed that it was a small-town political appointment. If her father became Postmaster, he had promised to give the job to one of his friends daughters; if his friend got the job, the reverse was also promised. Soren Nielsen was not appointed to the position. In 1942, Leanetta met Lester Tilton while he was digging for fishing worms in the Nielsen farm manure pile. At the time she was a waitress at Kraus's Cafe, a local restaurant. By 1944 a mutual decision was made to move to California. There were several push-pull factors involved in this decision. As a push-factor, both parties felt that the weather in Wisconsin was simply too cold during the winter months, when temperatures of sixty degrees below zero Farenheit were not uncommon; the lure of warm weather and mild winters were a major factor in their decision to migrate. A pull factor was the need for economic stability, which Wisconsin did not provide at that time. Allis Chalmers Company, which now employed both Leanetta and Lester Tilton, was an unstable company; there were several strikes a year and permanent, sound employment was needed. These were the years of World War II and the lure of California promised vast employment opportunities in the shipyards and other defense related industries. |

Research Note |
|---|
| Little is known about the early life of Soren. He was born in a small village (exact location unknown) just outside Kobenhavn, Denmark. The eldest of three children, Soren was forced to work full time to help support the family and continue with his education when his father died at thirty-four of acute appendicitis. Seeking work in Kobenhavn, Soren was required to sleep over a stable in a drafty barn and frequently went to bed hungry. Although unable to attend college, he was a Physical Education teacher in an elementary school for several years. He worked a second job as one of the King's guards, as did his father before him. Although research has been unable to ascertain the exact causes of his migration to America, it is generally believed that he left to seek greater economic opportunities. It has been rumored in the Nielsen family, however, that he was expelled from Denmark for some unknown reason. Denmark at this time had a severely depressed economy due to failed crops and cattle disease. His family had maintained correspondence with friends who had emigrated to the United States in the late 1890s. They wrote of the vast tracts of fertile, inexpensive land and many factory jobs available. The climate, too, was like that of 'home'. Soren left Denmark in 1905 with only a suitcase and landed on Ellis Island, New York. Following processing, he traveled to Plattsville, Wisconsin, where the friends of his family had settled. They aided him in the adjustment to the new culture of America through an introduction to the large Danish community in the region. They assisted in his obtaining employment as a field hand on a nearby farm. Soren had no problems adjusting to the new country or language. The Danish community, of course, had maintained many of the customs with which they were familiar, and this helped ease his transition into the new environment. Following his marriage to Leona, they moved to Ladysmith, Wisconsin, where Soren was again hired out as a field hand, and Leona taught in the classic American one-room schoolhouse (in English). In 1922, the farm was lost due to financial problems. Soren had allowed too many families to buy on credit as his store and could not collect the money owed him. His daughter, Leanetta, has stated, '...I can still remember Pa ripping these great ledgers into pieces and throwing them into the fire...he was not bitter about the loss. He accepted it as part of life...' Soren and the family moved to a smaller parcel of land into a small house that barely held all eight children. |
